So many articles have been written about the right hairstyle for your face shape and after getting this same question from a client recently, I want to debunk this myth.
Yes, there are many different face shapes, at least seven that I can think of including oval, square, heart, triangular, diamond, round and oblong. In fact, this great piece on WikiHow, tells you how to how to determine yours. However, when I meet with a new client about the right style, face shape isn’t a factor unless they are trying to downplay a feature such as a large forehead, long face or birthmark/scar. Instead, I believe your hairstyle should match your personality, sense of fashion and schedule.
Your chosen hairstyle says something about your personality so it should not be a disconnect with who you are. For example, if you are a fun loving and social person with a severe bob, that’s sending a conflicting message. With new clients, I like to assess personality by asking about profession, hobbies and what they like to do for fun.
Sense of fashion
Whether you dress conservatively or boldly, your hair style should complement your wardrobe. In addition to what I see, I like to ask clients where they shop for clothes to give me a better idea of who they are. Whether the answer is Forever 21 or Talbots, I know who I am dealing with.
Are you so pressed for time that you let your hair dry naturally on the way to work? Or, do you spend hours on blowdrying and styling? The answer to these questions helps me decide on a manageable style that suits your life. For example, a busy working mom doesn’t have time for curling and flat irons but a young professional or retiree might. During a style consult, I always ask if there are any style mandatories such as must be able to pull back into a ponytail.
